Face the World – Global Portrait Party: Eclipse Mill Edition

Opie and I will be heading back to the Mill soon. Our friend and neighbor Astrid Hiemer has organized the ‘Face the World – Global Portrait Party: Eclipse Mill Edition.’

 

The party will be at the gallery of the Eclipse Mill, in North Adams, MA on Sunday, May 6, from 2-5 pm.

 

Here, artists and non artists are being invited to participate.

 

The portrait party has taken on an additional national and international character and Astrid has already had responses from Boston, Germany and southern France, and -- the first jpeg has already arrived!

The portrait parties started in Toronto, Canada and are being planned globally with ‘Friend Me Projects’ (FMP) and are Facebook based.

 

Ours will be the first party held outside of Canada. All portraits will eventually be uploaded to the FMP-website.

It's All Happening at Snow Farm in June!

Opie and I recently came back from closing on our loft (major YAY!) - sadly we only stayed for a week this time, but while we were there, my close friend Gail told me her daughter-in law Nissa is teaching a workshop at Snow Farm in MA in June. Nissa's work is nothing short of breath-taking!

June 10-16, 2012 at Snow Farm: New England Craft Program

Tuition packages start at $540.

In this information packed workshop you will learn how to transfer designs from printed material or personal imagery to metal surfaces with mylar transfers.
Create texture, re-create a favorite pattern or commemorate a special event on non-ferrous metals. Students will learn the tricks of the etching process and gather resources on materials you need to work with etching beyond the workshop. Individual attention and assistance will be given to help complete small projects in this week-long intensive class.

Nissa Kubly has a MFA in Metals & Jewelry from Arizona State University and a BS in Art from University of Wisconsin- Madison. She also has a Teaching Certificate in Art and has been creating and teaching art to students of all ages. Since graduate school, Ms Kubly has been constructing and using her own handmade pinhole cameras in metal. Her work has been recognized through grants from 3M Corporation and Phoenix Art Museum and published in Design & Architecture, Pinhole Journal and New York Arts magazine . Nissa's work is exhibited by the Lisa Sette Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ and is part of permanent art collections across the country.

Morgan Open House and Silent Auction is Tonight

This year's Open House promises to be a great event with hors d'oeuvres, cash bar, demonstrations, and live music with the BW Contemporary Jazz Quintet. The Silent Auction 1(Snail Mail/Paper Trail) features art created on Morgan handmade paper by local and national artists. Silent Auction II is a collection of artworks and many surprise items.

And we created a very special Papier Mache Dada Doll just for the occasion!

It Was 17 Years Ago Today...

that the topping off ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio took place - and Opie was invited to be part of it. we had recently relocated here from New York City and Opie was on fire playing Conga Drums - and Tenor, Alto and Baritone Saxophones.

all of the musicians who took part in it actually signed the last beam and they looked completely buff in their hard hats – and although I can’t find that particular picture – here’s the beam being set into place.

the Ohio musicians who came together for this were called The Cleveland All-Stars and it was a day to remember. the stage was electric with music legends like Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby Womack, Joe Vitale from Crosby, Stills & Nash, Gilby Clarke from Guns N’ Roses, Dale Peters from the James Gang, Wally Bryson and Opie from the Raspberries … and so many, many more – way too numerous to mention!

and then like all good things, it was time to pack up and call it a day … but what a day it was!

we know it's been awhile since our last post and all we can say is "life happens", but now that we're winding down a bit, we wanted to call your attention to this most worthy cause.

but the gist of it all is, if 500 people donated $20 over the next four months, we can raise $10,000.00 - imagine that - $10,000.00!

The Ties that Bind Project

 A year ago this week a close friend of ours died from cancer.

 Her death was immediately followed by the death of two

 more friends, leaving Opie and me with a void in our hearts.

 Each of them died before their time. 

 When we were invited to create a charm for this most worthy cause, we were more than happy to.

 This charm has been etched with positive affirmations and wrapped with teal sinew.  A spiral, which represents Eternity, completes it.

 My father died of cancer when I was five.  He was in his 30's.

 An incredible doll is being created from hand made charms and altered ties created by several artists, too numerous to mention in this post.  100% of the profit will go to the OCRF, in support of their mission to help ovarian cancer patients and their loved ones.  For more information about the doll and the project, please click on The Ties That Bind link in the right sidebar.

We were recently asked to participate in a most worthy cause and would like to share this information with everyone.

The mission is simple in concept. Artists united in their creativity to benefit Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

Our project: Ties That Bind.

A hand made doll created with heart and soul, donning hand embellished men's dress ties and hand born charms.

100% of the profit goes to the OCRF, in support of their mission to help ovarian cancer patients and their loved ones.

There will be more information to follow, so please check back for updates.

In the meantime, we're happy to say that after our absence these past two months due to a combination of family illness, unexpected surgery and shooting the first quarter of our new book, we'll be updating our blog shortly.

Our Square for the Pink Artist Project

through the wonders of blogging, we discovered this project to help fight breast cancer. recently, our forever friend christine, lost her eight year battle with it. she was a unique, strong, free-spirited woman, with a heart as large as the universe. she and i were one month to the day apart in age. we didn't get to say goodbye. her memorial service and birthday party was celebrated jan. 19th, but opie and i were teaching in mexico and couldn't be there, leaving us saddened beyond words. while i've always described myself as "the sewing impaired", monica magness, gave me the encouragement to try. Happy Birthday Chris...we miss you.
